Fish Friday in Gouyave

We had a new experience tonight! We went to Fish Friday in Gouyave! We had lots of fun and good food!!! Fish Friday is kind of like a street festival they have every Friday in Gouyave, a small fishing village on the island located right on the ocean. They close down a couple of streets in the center of town and the town's people set up little tents to sell food from, obviously from the name most of the food they sell is fish. We were both a little worried whether we would like the food or not, but it was really good! We had shrimp stir fry, lobster stir fry, a fish sandwich and for dessert local ice cream(called Sugar and Spice). We had chocolate ice cream and nutmeg ice cream, the nutmeg ice cream was different but pretty good. The bus ride to Gouyave was rather scary (and long it took about an hour to get there), we were on a big bus traveling around sharp curves on steep hills with a crazy speeding bus driver! But, we made it there and back safe and sound...No Worries! Here are a few pictures.....

This picture was taken out the window of the bus...this is the one highway on the island. Notice there are no lines on the road but it has two lanes going both ways!

This is the booth where we both the shrimp stir fry and lobster stir fry. The cook is about to cut the lobster in half and boil it in the big pot.
Same booth from previous picture. Lots of lobster in the bucket!!

This is the booth where we got the fish sandwich...lots of people waiting in line!

These next two pictures are of the street. You can see all the people in the street, it was very crowded! You can also see the tents set up.

I plan to get a few more pictures from a friend. I will post those when I get them!

Begining of a new MPH Term

Well, we made it back to Grenada! We had a fairly smooth trip, of course nothing in the Caribbean can go perfect. We had a 2 hour delay in Puerto Rico. First, the delay was because the plane was not there. Then, the delay was a maintenance issue...which always makes you feel good. But, thank goodness they gave us a new plane so we made it to Grenada on Saturday night! We are praying that we don't get sick from the planes. We hope the Airborne medicine we took, thanks to The Green's, will work. If it does...what a great thing, because we had this girl with a terrible cough and cold sitting directly behind us on our last flight. Coughing into our backs what felt like the entire flight from Puerto Rico to Grenada. We did not get much sleep because every time we would get comfortable she would have a coughing fit! One thing did go perfect; the Grenada Airport...we made it through the airport (immigration, luggage, and customs) in less than 30 minutes!!! Derek was very pleased that we made it to campus just in time to hear the second half of the UT vs Memphis basketball game!! (Yay...Go Vols!!!...We are #1!) (Side note: that game was so big that... We were on campus today, of course, with our TN gear on. When a local noticed the Big Orange and he mentioned that game to us. Who would have ever imagined that a local Grenadian would be keeping up with US basketball. Especially when the same night was a huge Cricket game for the semi-finals or something...anyway thought that was interesting)

We finally got settled into our room today, that was a nightmare! We were finally able to get into storage this morning. We decided that we would carry our trunks back instead of paying a taxi to drive them across campus...Boy was that a big mistake!!! We got everything carried to our room after an hour and a half. Thankfully, one of our classmates came by and helped us with the last bit of the trip, he was a life saver! We are both quite sore after that! This is yet another lovely experience that we can sit back and laugh at now but not at the time it was happening! Our room is nice, very similar to the last one with just a few differences. We have a balcony which I think we will use a lot, we have talked about getting a hammock to hang out on it...I don't know if we could get it to stay up or not, but how nice would that be! One major difference is we have one desk and one closet. We are fine with just one desk we shared on last time and used the second for storage but we have a huge bookcase we can use for extra storage now. Our one closet is bigger than the previous ones but it should be fun sharing, we will see how it goes!!

The weather right now is a bit different that the last term. There is a constant cool breeze. In fact I am on our balcony right now covered up in a blanket! But, the weather is perfect...just warm enough to wear summer clothes but cool enough that you don't get too hot!

We were able to accomplish A LOT today!! We are registered and ready to start class tomorrow, we got our computers set up to get on campus wireless, we signed up for Internet in our room, and we got groceries. Speaking of food...we used our counter top oven to cook dinner tonight, baked ziti!! I really think we are going to love having this oven, it will be used a lot!

I realized today that living here you really learn to appreciate the small things! I am excited about a little plastic hook we have by the door, I can hang my purse on it and I don't forget to take it along when we go to the store. A friend of ours said he is "going to live a life of luxury this term". So, he brought a bed skirt, bathroom mats, and a shower curtain! As, you can probably tell we have to live a rather simple life here. But, I will say it again, it really makes you appreciate what you have at home and the small luxuries we have here.

Oh yeah!!! I am amazed and astonished by what I saw today!! As you probably know, I took a couple of cake decorated classes while I was home over break! We went into a new store in town today and they had a TON of Wilton cake decorating supplies, I think anything I would need to make a cake! I was shocked! I also saw another new party supply and craft store today as well! So, if this term my creative bug started itching again I know where I can go to get supplies!!

Well, I will close for now. We will upload pictures and videos as soon as we get some! We are planning to go to the beach on Wednesday so hopefully we will have pictures from that! We miss and love y'all!
